Tamara de Lempicka was a Polish born artist famous for her art-deco portrait paintings of the rich and famous of her era, as well as for some still life paintings and stylized nudes.
De Lempicka was born in Warsaw to a rich Polish family, but moved to study in Paris working with Maurice Denis, in a refined Cubist and neoclassical style. She exhibited in Paris and her paintings were featured by the American magazine Harper’s Bazaar, which gave her a breakthrough into popularity.
Her most famous painting, Auto portrait (Tamara in a Green Bugatti) was painted for the German magazine Die Dame, and was the front cover. De Lempicka traveled to the United States first in 1939 following the outbreak of World War II and spent her life with her second husband, the Baron Kuffner, between Hollywood and New York City.
Following the death of her husband she moved to live in Mexico, joined by her daughter Kizette who looked after her mother in later years. Tamara de Lempicka died in Mexico in 1980.
Arlette Boucard with Arums was painted in 1931 whilst Beautiful Rafaela was painted earlier in her career in 1917.
