AUDUBON, John James

Suppliers of John James Audubon Birds of America reproduction oil paintings

John James Audubon was an American ornithologist and artist famous for his paintings of American birds in their natural habitat. Audubon was born in 1785 at his father’s sugar plantation in what is now Haiti. His family moved to a farm in rural Pennsylvania where he began to study and paint the local wildlife, especially birds. In his early 40’s he was encouraged to travel to England with his portfolio of over 300 paintings and was met with immediate acceptance when he arrived in Liverpool. He was sponsored to produce an illustrated volume of 497 life sized American birds. Audubon’s famous book Birds of America contains over 400 paintings which can now be created as hand painted oil on canvas reproductions. King George VI was a patron of Audubon who was recognized for his exceptional work by the Royal Society of London. He was later elected as a fellow. In 2010 a copy of his Birds of America sold at Sotheby’s for $11.5 million, the second highest price ever paid for a single printed book.
