Joan Mitchell was an American abstract expressionist artist who worked for most of her life in France. She was born in Chicago and studied at the Art Institute of Chicago winning a scholarship to study in Paris and Provence. As a member of the New York School in the 1950’s, she was greatly influenced by Cezanne, Kandinsky, Monet and van Gogh, and then later by de Kooning and Franz Kline. Mitchell moved to Paris permanently in 1959, although she regularly returned to the United States.
