Clyfford Still was a 20th century American color field and abstract expressionist painter. Clyfford Still’s paintings are recognized as being of the same caliber as Barnett Newman, Mark Rothko and Jackson Pollock. He studied in New York but relocated to California where he met Rothko who introduced him to Peggy Guggenheim. He moved with other abstract expressionists and was represented by the American Art Dealer, Betty Parsons. Clyfford Still's paintings are very distinctive with a use of heavy impasto color fields, often jagged, and applied with a palette knife. During his lifetime, Clyfford Still sold only 11 of his oil paintings, but he actually completed over 2,400 works. At his death, his widow bestowed some 800 paintings and over 1500 drawings to a purpose built Clyfford Still Museum in Denver, Colorado. In order to fund the running costs of the Museum, four paintings were sold in 2011 for a total of $114 million. One of these paintings was PH1033 1976 which sold for just under US$20million.
