Lyonel Feininger was an Expressionist Movement artist, comic strip artist and caricaturist. He was born in New York City and traveled to Germany to study art. His father was a German composer and violinist and his American mother a singer. Feininger was associated with Der Blaue Reiter, and a founder of the Bauhaus School of Art. He was the first Bauhaus master artist in charge of printmaking, in 1919. He was declared a degenerate artist by the Nazis so he and his family moved back to America in 1936.
Feininger was a major figure of the Cubist Movement as well as the Expressionist school.
Many of Feininger’s expressionism paintings are distinctive and angular. Feininger’s oil paintings Sail Boats 1929 and Lady in Mauve 1922 are both easily attributed to him.
