Impressionist Oil Paintings from British Artist Alfred Sisley

Alfred Sisley was born in 1839 and died in 1899.

He was born in Paris to wealthy English parents. He studied art at the Academy Des Beaux Arts, where he became acquainted with Claude Monet and Pierre Auguste Renoir.

Like all impressionist artists, Sisley painted plein air.

For a significant part of his life, he lived in France. However, he made regular trips back to the UK, and some of his paintings are of the landscapes surrounding the Thames River near Molesey and Hampton Court.

Sisley's oil painting, The Regatta at Molesey near Hampton Court 1874, is held by the Musee d'Orsay in Paris. Gustave Caillebotte previously owned the artwork but was bequeathed to the French state upon his death.

Sisley visited Wales and painted at least 11 landscapes of the Gower Peninsular.

One such painting, Storr Rock, Lady's Cove, Le Soir (Evening) 1897, is held by the National Museum of Wales. It is a small oil painting on canvas at 65.5 c 81.5cm (26 x 32").

The Art Institute of Chicago holds two of Sisley's famous landscape paintings; A Turn in the Road 1872 and Street in Moret c1890.

He produced many artworks, with an estimated 900 oil paintings, drawings, and pastels during his lifetime.

The Nazis looted many of Alfred Sisley's artworks, and many paintings remain lost.

Sisley's financial circumstances changed considerably when his father's business suffered due to the Franco-Prussian war. He relied on patronage and led a very much altered lifestyle.

Alfred Sisley's paintings did not receive acclaim until after his death.

Snow on the Road, Louveciennes 1874 achieved a sale price of just over $9m in 2017; it was the highest price ever paid for an Alfred Sisley painting.
