British Impressionist painter Alfred Sisley spent most of his life living and working in France. He was born in Paris to wealthy English parents and studied art at the Academy Des Beaux Arts, where he came to meet and know Monet and Renoir. Sisley made regular trips back to the UK and some of his best known paintings are of areas of the Thames near Molesey and Hampton Court.
Sisley’s painting The Regatta at Molesey 1874 Regatta at Hampton Court, painted the same year are two of his English landscape scene paintings.
Sisley visited Wales and painted at least 11 landscapes of the Gower Peninsular, some of which are now held by the National Museum of Wales in Cardiff. During his lifetime Sisley is known to have painted over 900 oil paintings and over 100 pastels and sketches.
