Buy American Modernism paintings by Alfred Henry Maurer

Alfred Henry Maurer was a 19th and early 20th century American artist who worked in the avant guard movement internationally and in New York City. Maurer was born in New York and studied with William Merritt Chase before attening the Academy Julian in Paris, although he spend much of his time copying works in the Louvre. Maurer’s early paintings were compared to Whistler. He won a prize at the Carnegie International Exhibition which was awarded by Winslow Homer who was one of the judges. Maurer changed his painting style whilst in Paris to Fauve and Cubism. His father did not approve of his new paintings and refused significant financial support. Maurer was unable to sell in sufficient volume to make a living and committed suicide at age 64. His work is much appreciated now and hangs in the collections of many of the most respected galleries and museums in America.
