Bartolome Esteban Murillo was a 17th century Spanish Baroque painter, known for both his religious paintings and for portrait paintings of local life of the time. Murillo’s oil paintings depict women and children and street scenes showing life at the time. Murillo trained in Seville and then moved to work in Madrid. His paintings were very influential on artists such as Gainsborough and Greuze. Museums that hold many works of Murillo are the Prado in Madrid, the Hermitage in St Petersburg and the Wallace Collection in London.

One of the most famous religious paintings by Murillo is The Assumption of the Virgin which can be seen at the Hermitage Museum. Murillo’s oil painting, Aunnunciation of the Lord is located at The Prado Museum.

Murillo’s “A Peasant Boy Leaning on a Still c1675” is a really delightful portrait of a young boy which is held by the National Gallery in London.
