Giovanni Antonio Cana known as Canaletto. 18th century Italian painter of landscapes, mainly of his native Venice. Canaletto painted during the Rococo Movement and Baroque Movement periods. He was from a family of well-respected painters and was apprenticed to his father and his elder brother. Canaletto studied in Rome but returned to Venice to take up his professional career. He was much admired by the British Aristocracy, who purchased many of his paintings while on the Grand Tour. Canaletto was encouraged to go to England and he lived there for some 15 years, painting scenes of London as well as the castles and great country houses of the English nobility. The work of Canaletto is highly collected and his most expensive work ever sold at auction was a view of the Grand Canal in Venice that sold for $25 million in 2005.
Canaletto painted Westminster Abbey in 1749 and Westminster Bridge with the Lord Mayor’s Procession on the Thames in 1747. Canaletto’s oil paintings of Venice and London are all recreated by one of our resident professional artists.
