Paul Delaroche was a 19th century French painter specializing in life-size historical subjects. Delaroche was born in Paris and lived there for almost all of his life. He taught extensively and his paintings were extremely popular due their dramatic style. Delaroche visited Rome enjoying historical Renaissance art. In 1837 he was commissioned to paint a huge 3 section mural totaling 27 meters, for the Theater of the Ecole Des Beaux Arts, which was inspired by The School of Athens and the painter Raphael. When the mural was damaged by fire in 1855 Delacroix began the repair and restoration work, but died before the task was completed.
La Jeune Martyre 1855 (The Young Martyr) by Paul Delaroche is housed at the Louvre Museum in Paris. This reproduction painting by Delaroche and other artists of the Romantic Era are now available to buy online.
