Ivan Aivazovsky was a Russian marine artist of the 19th century who was born and lived in the Crimea. Aivazovsky is considered one of the best ever marine artists. He was appointed as the main artist for the Russian Navy, and in a career spanning 60 years he is thought to have painted some 6,000 seascape paintings. His most famous work is the Ninth Wave, painted in 1850, held by the State Russian Museum in St Petersburg.
