Lazar Markovich El Lissitzky otherwise simply known as El Lissitzky. A 20th century Russian artist known for his Suprematist style and for his influence of the later Bauhaus movement. Lissitzky was born in a small Jewish community near Smolensk, and when refused admission to art school in St Petersburg, he went to study in Germany. He was forced to return to Moscow at the outbreak of World War 1, and devoted himself to the study of Jewish art. He went to work with fellow Russian Jewish artist Marc Chagall at the newly created Peoples Art School, and created a series of posters. He had periods of Cubism, impressionism and Primitivism, before focusing on the creation of geometric forms. He developed his own style which he named Proun, which were abstract geometric paintings.
