Maynard Dixon was a painter of the American West. Dixon was born in Fresno, California, and studied at the California School of Design. He became an illustrator in San Francisco for the Overland Monthly. Maynard Dixon visits to Arizona and New Mexico sparked his interest in the Old West. He moved briefly to New York, but returned to California when his marriage ended. Dixon met and married famous photographer Dorothea Lange and together they traveled around the West painting and taking photographs.
Maynard Dixon painted a series of social realism paintings during the Great Depression exploring themes of strikes, displaced workers and poverty. When Maynard Dixon married for the third time, to Edith Hamlin, he left San Francisco for Utah and it is here that some of his best landscape paintings of the American West were done. Dixon kept a winter home in Tucson Arizona and a large portion of his paintings are held in Tucson at the Maynard Dixon Museum.
