A Russian artist born in Poland, Kazimir Severinovich Malevich studied at the Moscow School of Painting and took up what he described as a Cubo-Futurist style, which he developed into Suprematism, the painting of geometric forms in a limited range of colors. Malevich was banned as an artist in Russia and until Glasnost and most of his paintings were confiscated and held under lock and key by the Russian State. In 1989 many of Malevich paintings found their way into Europe and North America and exhibitions, in particular by the Guggenheim Museum in New York, made his art famous. In 2008 his canvas Suprematist Composition set a world record for any Russian artist, at Sotheby’s in New York, selling for $60 million.
