David James was British maritime artist of the 19th century who exhibited at the Royal Academy. James started painting coastal scenes around Cornwall and the Scilly Isles, and then traveled and painted more extensively through the British Isles from the Norfolk coast to Yorkshire. His paintings of the Pembrokeshire coast in Wales made him commercially successful but he always returned to Cornwall, and occasionally Devon. Whilst David James did include sailing ships in some of his paintings, his most famous seascape paintings are studies of the sea itself.
Two seascape paintings by David James, An Atlantic Roll and A Cornish Breaker were exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1881.
