American Impressionist painter Matilda Browne was an American of the late 19th and early 20th century. Unusually for a female artist during that time she was accepted into the Old Lyme School, in Connecticut, where she was very highly regarded by her fellow male peers. Matilda Browne is famous for her Impressionist paintings and specializing in flowers and cattle. She had been taught as a girl by her neighbor, Thomas Moran of the Hudson River School of artists. Matilda Browne traveled to Europe studying in France and the Netherlands but for the majority of her life she painted in New York and Connecticut. Matilda Browne married the historian and writer Frederick Van Wyck and she died in Greenwich Connecticut aged 78.
