Peter Paul Rubens was a 16th and 17th century Flemish painting who is considered to be the most influential artist of the Baroque tradition. Rubens is famous for religious altarpiece paintings, landscapes, portraits and history paintings depicting Christian events. Rubens painted incessantly throughout his life and is believed to have painted over 1,400 artworks. He was knighted by both Charles I of England and Philip IV of Spain, as recognition of his Royal commissions. Rubens religious paintings are generally recognized as some of the best Old Masters ever painted and his “Massacre of the Innocents” sold for the world record price of $76 million at Sotheby’s in London in 2002
