Find out about oil paintings reproductions wall art by Paul Signac

Paul Signac was a French Neo-Impressionist painter born in Paris in 1863, who worked with Georges Seurat to develop the Pointillist style of painting. Signac met both Claude Monet and Georges Seurat in 1884, but moved away from the brushstrokes of Monet and Impressionism to the small dots of color used by Seurat to develop a Pointillist style.

Signac spent Summers in the South of France and bought a house in St Tropez, where his artist friends Henri Matisse and Henri-Edmond Cross painted with him.

Signac met and painted with Vincent van Gogh in 1887 and is known to have painted with Camille Pissarro during 1888. Pissarro was also best man at Signac’s wedding.

Signac inspired the next generation of artists, in particular Henri Matisse and Andre Derain, helping to encourage the works of the Fauvists. Signac was the first person to purchase a painting from Matisse.

Signac’s best known paintings are The Port of St Tropez, 1901, Grand Canal, Venice, 1905, Au Temps d'Harmonie c1893 (In the Time of Harmony 1893), and Place des Lices, 1893. Signac is also known for his Portrait of communist art critic Felix Feneon, painted in 1890 and held by the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
