Jozef Israels was an 18th century Dutch painter and most famous as being a leading member of The Hague School of landscape painters. He is also the father of Isaac Israels, the Dutch Impressionist painter. Israels was deeply influenced by his stay at Zandvoort, a fishing village near Haarlem where he saw the poverty and daily struggle of the fishermen and their family. In this way he is compared to Jean-Francois Millet, who also painted scenes of rural poverty in his native France.
Israel’s most famous paintings are “Alone in the World”, “A Jewish Wedding”, and “Mending the Nets”.
