Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez was a 17th century Spanish court painter and one of the most famous and respected artists of the Spanish Baroque art movement. Valesquez was famous for his portraits and he painted members of the Spanish Royal Court as well as some of the most important figures in Europe of the time. Velasquez’ paintings were largely unknown outside of Spain until the 19th century, but subsequent famous artists, particularly Picasso and Dali, have stated that his paintings influenced their own art. Francis Bacon was also inspired by Velasquez with his painting of Pope Innocent X.
Valesquez painted Pop Innocent X in 1650 and his religious painting, the Coronation of the Virgin was completed in 1645.
