Martin Johnson Heade was famous for his still life paintings and landscapes depicting salt marshes and seascapes. His interest in landscapes was as a result of his friendship with the artists of the Hudson River School, although he was never a member. He went to live and study in New York and painted his early works of the New England coast. He also traveled widely to South America and is known for his studies of tropical flowers and humming birds. Following his marriage, Heade moved to live and work in Florida and there continued with his still life paintings of flowers, notably magnolias.
