Other Victorian artists who feature animals in their paintings are Briton Riviere and Charles Burton Barber. Briton Riviere's paintings include romantic portrayals of animals and children. • The Lady of Shalott by John William Waterhouse is one of our most popular Victorian artworks. Inspired by Tennyson's poem, which tells the sad story of the Lady of Shalott.  A curse forces her to live in isolation. She sees the world through a mirror, unable to look directly at the outside. Waterhouse's famous painting is a significant Victorian work of art.
• Proserpine (1874), painted by Dante Gabriel Rossetti, is a mythological oil painting that characterizes themes of life and death.
• Other notable famous paintings are Flaming June by Frederic Leighton and The Roses of Heliogabalus by Lawrence Alma-Tadema.
