Where did Orientalism paintings originate from?
The term Orientalism came into being during the mid 1900's when Western artists began creating oil paintings depicting Eastern scenes. The Orient was defined as North Africa and beyond to China, South East Asia and Japan. French Orientalism was encouraged by Napoleon's military campaigns in North Africa and especially Egypt. French artists such as Jean Leon Gerome painted many oil paintings with North African subjects thereby establishing the genre Orientalism paintings. Jean Leon Gerome's, Pool in a Harem oil painting is held by the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg and is just one example of many the fabulous Orientalism replicas which are now available.
