Artemisia Gentileschi is an Italian artist born in Rome in 1593. She died in 1653 and was a true pioneer in the art world. She was the daughter of Orazio Gentileschi, also a painter, and she stands out as one of the first and most successful women artists. Among the many famous Baroque artists, she holds the unique title of being the only female painter. Her professional journey began at the tender age of 15, and her early art was reminiscent of Caravaggio's paintings, a style she would later make her own.
Gentileschi's body of work includes mythological art and Religious paintings. Her Religious art includes Judith Slaying Holofernes, held by the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, and Susanna and the Elders, which she completed at the age of 17. Her famous paintings are acclaimed for their naturalism and are the subject of major international art exhibitions.
Artemisia Gentileschi was the first successful female Florentine artist to be accepted by the Accademia delle Arti del Disegno. As a highly respected artist, she gained favor with the Medici Court and received patronage from the Spanish nobility. From 1620 to 1626, Gentileschi was working in Rome when Judith and her Maidservant was completed. The original oil on canvas painting, located at the Detroit Institute of Arts, is evidence of her skilled use of Chiaroscuro. After a period in Naples, Artemisia Gentileschi attended the Court of Charles 1 in London, where her father, Orazio, was the Court painter. Self Portrait as the Allegory of Painting belongs to the Royal Collection Trust. After Orazio died in 1639, it is believed that Artemisia returned to Naples, where she continued to paint.
The history of oil painting reproductions is a rich and fascinating one. Dating back to the 16th century, many Old Masters artists employed apprentice painters to recreate their original artworks, a practice that continues to this day. Even the great Leonardo da Vinci honed his skills by copying the Renaissance oil paintings of Andrea Del Verrocchio. This tradition of learning and appreciation for the masters' works has been carried forward by artists such as Edgar Degas and John Singer Sargent, who also employed this practice.
