Arthur Frank Mathews is an American artist born in 1860 in Wisconsin. Although training as an architect, he studied art at the California School of Design and the Academie Julian in Paris, just like his father. He is a founder of the American Arts and Crafts Movement, and many of his famous paintings celebrate the Art Nouveau style. As an example, Youth 1917, painted just after the end of the Art Nouveau period, illustrates the influence of this early 20th century art movement.
While studying in Paris, Arthur Mathews was inspired by the Tonalism Art of James McNeil Whistler and Jules Lefebvre paintings.
Upon his return to San Francisco, Arthur Frank Mathews taught at the Art Students League, later becoming its Director. In opposition to the views of Impressionism artist Emil Carlsen, Dove actively encouraged female students. After the 1906 earthquake, Mathews and his wife Lucia published a monthly magazine promoting American arts and crafts and established a furniture shop. Arthur Dove received many commissions for murals, including a series of paintings for the State Capital Building in Sacramento and Stanford University's medical library.
Paintings by Arthur F Mathews can be seen in many major museums across America, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Crocker Art Museum, and the Smithsonian Art Museum.
