Charles Auguste Emile Durand : Famous Portrait Paintings

Charles Auguste Emile Durand, better known as Carolus Duran, is a Realism portrait artist. He is known for his oil painting portraits of fashionable Paris society from the latter part of the 19th century.

Carolus Durand's famous paintings include:

• Portrait of Edouard Manet 1880 by Carolus-Durand. Currently held in a Private Collection. Carolus Duran and the French artist Edouard Manet were friends, and his portrait of the artist has been painted in Manet's looser painting style.
• The Kiss 1868, also known as Le Baiser. Gustav Klimt's The Kiss painting follows in the footsteps of Duran's painting, The Kiss, 1868. It also portrays a romantic encounter painting of an embracing couple kissing tenderly. It is one of our most popular paintings.
• Sleeping Man 1861 On display at the Palais des Beaux-Arts de Lille. He also painted The Convalescent the same year. It is a highly regarded oil painting on canvas that he won 1st prize in the Wicar de Lille competition.
• Study of Lilia 1887 by Carolus Durand. On display at the National Gallery of Art in New York, this beautiful portrait painting shows Lilia with her back turned to the viewer.
• Carolus-Durand Famous Nude Paintings. Lila, painted in 1888, again depicts the sitter with her back to the viewer. Another of his famous nude paintings is Danae 1800, on display at the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux.

Who is Carolus Durand

Born in Lille, France, in 1837, he was a French Academic artist and a painter of the Realism art movement. His oil on canvas paintings are influenced by the oil paintings of Baroque artist Diego Velázquez and Gustave Courbet's realism paintings. While his career concentrated mainly on portrait paintings, he also taught art. His most famous student is John Singer Sargent, also known for his famous portraits. Carolus Durand died in France in 1917, aged 79.
