Gustave Courbet was a 19th century French painter born in Ornans, France. The artist Courbet was the son of a wealthy farmer and landowner. He moved to Paris and visited the Louvre where he copied paintings by the famous painters Rubens, Rembrandt, Caravaggio and Francisco de Zurburan. In 1848 ten of his paintings were accepted into the prestigious Paris Salon. Gustave Courbet was an early proponent of what came to be known as Realism, depicting real life in his work, and not the more stylized subject matter that most of his contemporaries were painting. One of Gustave Courbet’s most famous paintings, The Artists’ Studio, was considered a masterpiece by Baudelaire and Eugene Delacroix. He was imprisoned for vandalism of a national monument, the Vendome Column, and fled to Switzerland in exile where he founded a Swiss Realist School, inspiring Ferdinand Hodler and Auguste Baud-Bovy amongst others. Courbet’s legacy is evident in the paintings of many subsequent artists, including Edward Hopper, Paul Cezanne, and James McNeil Whistler.

Courbet’s erotic paintings of nude women include Reclining Nude 1862 and Woman in the Wave 1868.

Gustave Courbet also painted a series of Wave painting of which The Wave 1869 is perhaps his most famous.
