Charles Burton Barber is an English artist born in 1845 and died in 1894 at 49. His prized Victorian dog paintings were widely exhibited during his short life.
Whilst he is acclaimed for his paintings of dogs, his body of work includes paintings of children and other animals. Barber was a student at the Royal Academy and was recognized as the finest artist of animal paintings of his era and in 1883 became a member of the Royal Institute of Oil Painters.
Charles Burton Barber was commissioned by aristocracy and Royalty to create their pet portraits. Queen Victoria requested several paintings of her dogs and children. One of his famous paintings, Queen Victoria with John Brown painted in the final year of his life. The painting was sold in 2011, achieving an unexpectedly high sale price of $150,000. Charles Burton Barber achieved great success during his lifetime.
