Dirk van Baburen is 17th century Dutch painter whose family moved to Utrecht when he was a child. He was a close follower of the Italian artist Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio, known as Caravaggio.
He was a founder of the Utrecht School of Caravaggisti, a group of artists whose profound influence stemmed from paintings by Caravaggio. This group included another Dutch artist, Hendrick ter Brugghen who is known for his paintings of saints and religious art.
Also known as Dirck van Baburen, he was born in 1595 and died in 1624, marking a relatively brief career. Only a few of his oil paintings are known today and most were created in Rome during the period 1612-1615.
Dirck van Baburen's most famous oil painting, The Procuress painted in 1622, is on view at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The Procuress oil painting holds many similarities to Caravaggio's famous painting The Cardsharps which was painted some 28 years earlier, in 1594.
Baburen's Dutch Golden Age paintings are located in museums and galleries across the globe, including the National Gallery in London, the Borghese Gallery, and the San Pietro in Montorio Church in Rome.
