She was a student at the National Gallery of Victoria School, and her contemporaries include fellow Australian artists Arthur Streeton, Frederick McCubbin, and James Conder. She was married to Arthur Merric Boyd, also an artist, and they had five children together. She is the mother of Penleigh Boyd, who died at the age of 33, who is also known for his paintings of landscapes. She is also grandmother to Arthur Boyd, who is one of Australia's most popular 20th century artists.
