Frederick Varley was a 20th century British painter who migrated to Canada and became a member of the Group of Seven Artists. Varley served in the First World War as a war artist, and, upon his return to Canada he and AY Jackson founded the Group of Seven Canadian painters. Varley moved to Vancouver, but returned to Toronto after bouts of depression. He traveled to the Arctic with a group of artists and then to the Soviet Union, in an early cultural exchange after the end of the Cold War. Frederick Varley died in Toronto in 1969.
