Hans Von Aachen was a Mannerism artist born in Germany in 1552 during the late Renaissance art period. His oil paintings are versatile and prolific. His most important patron was the Emperor Rudolf II. Von Aachen created many portrait paintings of royalty and aristocrats, but he is also known for Religious Art and skilled nude paintings.
Aachen trained in his native Germany but lived and worked in Venice, Italy, for 14 years. While in Italy, he studied the famous Renaissance paintings of Michelangelo and Titian.
During his later life, he returned to Munich in Germany before spending time in Prague.
Hans von Aachen's paintings are considered some of the finest Mannerism paintings, alongside famous artists Giuseppe Arcimboldo, Bronzino, and El Greco.
Many of van Aachen's mythological paintings and biblical art are held in European museums, including the National Gallery in London and The Hermitage in St. Peterburg. However, The Museum of Fine Arts in Boston owns his oil painting Pallas Athena, Venus, and Juno.
Although the artist achieved recognition during his lifetime, Hans von Aachen's paintings were primarily forgotten after he died in 1615. However, in the 20th century, his paintings were rediscovered and recognized for their significant contribution to the Mannerism art movement. Today, von Aachen is one of the most important Mannerist painters of the late Renaissance art period.
