Belgian artist James Ensor had an important influence on Expressionism and Surrealism. He was a member of the Belgian group known as Les XX, the 20. Whilst Ensor’s early paintings were rather dark and somber he later adopted a brighter style, painting unusual subject matter. Ensor paintings include carnivals and puppets. He also dressed skeletons and painted them. James Ensor is known as ‘the painter of masks’ and his Self-Portrait with Masks 1809 depicts the artist in the center of masked carnival heads.
Ensor began his series of religious paintings with his painting The Entry of Christ into Brussels. This painting is considered a forerunner of Expressionism and hangs at the J Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles.
