James Tissot was a 19th century French genre artist who lived and became successful in Paris before moving to London later in his life. Tissot studied at the Ecole Des Beaux Arts where he met American painter James McNeill Whistler and fellow French artists Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet. Tissot’s portrait work took him to London where he painted wealthy industrialists and their families. At the end of his life he began to paint Biblically inspired watercolors which were hugely popular.
