John Constable was British landscape artist famous for his paintings of the Suffolk countryside, where he was born. In his lifetime Constable was not a popular artist and he sold more of his work in France than in his native England. Constable was highly respected painter in France and his landscape paintings inspired the group of artists known as the Barbizon School, principally Millet, Rousseau and Daubigny. Constable was into a wealthy Suffolk family and was able to indulge his talent for sketching and painting. Constable studied at the Royal Academy and was inspired by the paintings of Gainsborough and Peter Paul Rubens, as well as the 17th century master Claude Lorrain, who Constable described as “the most perfect landscape painter the world ever saw”. Constable was elected a member of the Royal Academy in London and in later life lectured there frequently. Constable’s paintings are held by mainly British Galleries. John Constable’s famous painting The Hay Wain is held by the National Gallery in London.
