John La Farge was a 18th and early 19th century American artist born to French parents in New York City. He intended to become a lawyer but after a visit to Paris decided to be an artist instead. Le Farge studied with William Morris Hunt in Newport Rhode Island. He went on to paint murals and also design stained glass windows and had many wealthy patrons such as Cornelius Vanderbilt. He filed a stained glass patent and worked alongside Tiffany who had a similar patent for staining glass. His great inspiration was the Far East, and Japanese culture in particular, and he traveled extensively in that region throughout his life, also visiting Tahiti and Hawaii. He also taught as an Instructor at the Metropolitan Museum of Art School.
