John Steuart Curry was an American painter of the 20th century known for his Regionalism oil paintings of his native Kansas. Curry was admired by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney and many of his works were purchased for the Whitney Museum of American Art, where they can be seen today. Steuart Curry’s paintings were mainly of local regional events in his home state of Kansas, depicting everyday life of local farmers and workers of the time. Ironically, Curry’s work was not liked in Kansas, as his paintings were seen to be a criticism of the worst aspects of life in the State. Curry, however, saw them merely as representative of the life of the time. Along with painters Thomas Hart Benton and Grant Wood, John Steuart Curry is known as one the great American Regionalism artists.
