Julius Adam was born in Munich, Germany, in 1852. He came from a family of artists, with his father and brothers also being painters. He studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich and later traveled to Paris to further his studies. While Julius Adam's early paintings focused on landscapes and genre scenes, he soon discovered his niche in painting animals, and particularly his love of cats.
