Louis Anquetin was a French painter of the late 19th and early 20th century who is associated with the Post-Impressionist Art Movement and was a friend of Vincent van Gogh.
Anquetin trained in Paris with Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and as can be seen many of his paintings are heavily influenced by this artist. Anquetin developed a style of painting known as Cloisonnism, inspired by stained glass windows, where the outlines of the subject matter in his paintings were painted with heavy black contour lines.
Anquetin’s most famous painting is Avenue de Clichy; Five o’clock in the Evening, 1887, which is thought to have inspired Vincent van Gogh’s famous and painting Café Terrace at Night otherwise known as the Café Terrace on the Place du forum, which was painted in 1888, the following year.
