Maria Blanchard was born in 1881 with physical disabilities with a deformed spine which affected her ability to walk. She is a Spanish painter known for her individual style of Cubism art. Her real name is Maria Guitierrez-Cueto y Blanchard. Her father was a journalist and the family was affluent. Maria was encouraged to draw by her father.
Aged 22 Maria Blanchard studied at the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando in Madrid. Here, she learned to use a bright color palette, as seen in her early oil painting, Cubist Composition 1916. In 1916 Blanchard moved to Paris, where she became friends with Juan Gris, a fellow Spanish Cubist painter. During this time she also met Diego Rivera and exhibited at the Salon of Modern Art in Madrid in 1915.
Maria Blanchard is one of Spain's famous women artists; her oil paintings are on display at the Museo Nacional Centre de Arte Reina Sofia in Madrid and the Courtauld Institute of Art in London. Famous paintings by Blanchard include Girl at her First Communion and Cubist Still Life 1917.
Although Maria Blanchard was fortunate to achieve recognition during her lifetime, economic decline left her dependent on her good friend Frank Flausch. She died of tuberculosis in Paris at the age of 51.
