Maurits Cornelis Escher was a 20 century Dutch graphic artist who made geometrically inspired woodcuts and lithographs. Early in his career, he was interested in insects, ants, bees and grasshoppers, and later on he was inspired by mathematics and the study of tessellations, the repeating of complex patterns. He saw these in detail in his study of early Italian mosaic art, as well as Moorish art in southern Spain, at the Alhambra Palace in Granada. Escher left Italy with his Swiss wife and family at the beginning of WW2 to live in Switzerland.
popular paintings by Maurits Cornelis are "Ant", and "Metamorphosis 1" 1932
