Nils Dardel was a 20th century Swedish post-Impressionist painter, and the grandson of an earlier painter, Fritz von Dardel. His family were rich landowners and Nils was able to study at the Royal Swedish Academy in Stockholm. He was close to Nita Wallenberg and his well-known portrait of her was painted in Japan, where he had first met her in 1917. He travelled extensively throughout his life, working in Paris for a number of years and experimenting with Pointillism, Cubism and Fauvism. He died in New York.
His best known painting, "The Dying Dandy" became an icon of the Swedish gay community in the 1980's and this painting was sold for a record price of $1.5 million 1988. His painting "Waterfall" broke that record in 2012 when it was sold for $2.75 million, the most expensive modern Swedish painting ever sold.
