Pablo Picasso was a Spanish painter and sculptor and is probably the most famous and widely known artist of the 20th century. Pablo Picasso paintings are among some of the most famous paintings in the world. His early career was dominated by his Blue and then Rose periods, and then his Cubist periods. Boy with a Pipe was sold for $104 million in 2004 and was one of Picasso’s most expensive oil paintings. Picasso was trained by his father, who was also an accomplished artist. He then studied in Barcelona and later in Paris, where he befriended many famous contemporary painters. After a visit to Italy in 1917 Picasso painted neoclassical style paintings and this was followed by a Surrealist period. Picasso died in France in 1973, having produced a total of some 50,000 works of art during his lifetime.
