Patrick Henry Bruce is a 19th and early 20th century American Cubist artist. Born in Virginia, he was born into a wealthy plantation family that lost its fortune in the American Civil War.
Patrick Bruce studied first in New York with William Merritt Chase and Robert Henri, later moving to Paris, where he studied with the famous French artist Henri Matisse. He remained in France for most of his life.
Although Patrick Bruce aligned with other artists in the Cubism Art Movement, he never tied himself to a specific style. However, his later oil paintings show a geometric form that influenced Fernand Léger and Amedée Ozenfant during the 1920s.
