Spanish Catalan artist Ramon Casas I Carbo, more generally known as Ramon Casas is recognized for his portrait paintings. Casas was born into a wealthy Catalan family and able to indulge his passion for painting by spending summers in Paris and winters in Barcelona, Madrid and Granada.
Casas established his reputation with famous oil paintings on canvas, posters and postcards. Ramon Casas artworks were used commercially to define the Catalan art nouveau movement known as Modernisme. Catalan Modernisme embraced all forms of art and architect Antoni Gaudi was a significant member of the movement.
Ramon Casas was greatly influenced by French Impressionist artists Edgar Degas and Edouard Manet. Casas formed a friendship with fellow Spanish artist Santiago Rusinol and together they should worked on a publication which Casas illustrated. The Els Quatre Gats bar in Barcelona provided a popular venue for emerging artists in the late 19th and early 20th century. The project was partly financed by Ramon Casas and his poster designs were used on much of the marketing material.
