19th century American portrait and genre painter William Mount is known for his scenes from everyday life. Mount was born in Long Island, New York, and most of his work is owned and exhibited by the Long Island Museum of American Art. Mount was a contemporary of the Hudson River School, although not a member, as he moved away from landscape paintings.
William Sidney Mount’s paintings portray many African-American subjects. The Bone Player was painted in 1856 and is one such example of his work.
