Where is the Scottish National Gallery?

Located on the Mound in Edinburgh, near Princes Street, the Scottish National Gallery (formerly the National Gallery of Scotland) traces its origins to 1819. The Royal Institution for the Encouragement of the Fine Arts of Scotland started the collection. By 1826 the Royal Scottish Academy established a group of Scottish artists whose paintings formed the basis of a national collection.

In 1850, a new building was designed by Scottish architect William Playfair in the style of a Greek temple.  Built next to the Royal Scottish Academy, also built in the style of a Greek temple,  the collection moved to the building when completed in 1859.

The Scottish National Gallery holds a diverse collection of paintings, from Old Masters to portraits to Impressionist art.

The most famous are considered to be Titian’s Diana and Actaeon, Old Woman Frying Eggs by Diego Velazquez, John Singer Sargent’s Portrait of Lady Agnew of Lochnaw, Vermeer’s Christ in the House of Martha and Mary, Poplars on the Epte by Claude Monet, Turner’s Bell Rock Lighthouse, The Honorable Mrs. Graham, painted by Thomas Gainsborough, Orchard in Blossom by Vincent van Gogh, Vision after the Sermon by Paul Gauguin, and La Luzerne, Saint Denis, by pointillist artist Georges Seurat.

Woman Drying Herself by Edgar Degas, Olive Trees by Vincent van Gogh, Haystacks (Snow) by Claude Monet, The Madonna of the Yarwinder, by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt’s A Woman in Bed, the well-known portrait of The Reverend Robert Walker Skating on Duddingston Lock, by Sir Henry Raeburn, and The Monarch of the Glen, by Sir Edwin Landseer all form part of the collection. John Constable’s Vale of Dedham and an extensive collection of watercolors by J.M.W. Turner are also on view.
