Where is the Legion of Honor Museum?

The Legion of Honor Museum is located in Lincoln Park, San Francisco, alongside the de Young Museum.  These two museums are collectively known as The Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco.

The Museum was a gift from Alma de Bretteville Spreckels. Alma was the wife of a prominent San Francisco businessman Adolph Spreckels. Ironically, Spreckels shot and wounded Michael de Young, the founder of the de Young Museum.

The Legion of Honor Museum is so named because the building replicates the Palais de la Legion d’Honneur in Paris.

Standing on high ground within Lincoln Park, the Museum enjoys views over San Francisco and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Which Famous Oil Paintings are in the Collection?

The Legion of Honor focuses on European Art, mainly French oil paintings.

Old master oil paintings also appear in the collection with famous artworks by artists like El Greco, Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt.

In addition, the Museum displays numerous famous oil paintings by French Impressionists Edgar Degas, Pierre Auguste Renoir, Claude Monet, and Camille Pissarro.  

Claude Monet's seascape painting, Waves Breaking 1881, and his Water Lilies painting of circa 1914 are both on view at the Museum.

Sailboats on the Seine at Petit-Gennevilliers by Monet is also in the Collection.  It is one of our famous impressionist oil paintings.

Religious paintings on display at the Museum include two El Greco paintings,  St John the Baptist and St Francis Venerating the Crucifix.
