The 17th century Dutch artist Rembrandt is considered to be one of the greatest European painters in history. He painted a great variety of subjects, from portraits and self-portraits to landscapes and biblical scenes, as well as mythological scenes. After a brief period of study, Rembrandt set up his own studio and was noticed by Prince Frederick who purchased paintings many paintings from him.
Rembrandt moved from The Hague to Amsterdam, where he continued to paint for the rest of his life. He married several times and fathered many children with both wives and mistresses. Rembrandt’s oil paintings are widely held in museums and private collections around the world and can be seen in the Frick Collection and the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.
Rembrandt’s The Night Watch is undoubtedly his most famous painting whilst the well-known religious painting, Christ in the Storm on the Sea of Galilee was painted in 1633.
Rembrandt’s Self Portrait with Two Circles is widely considered to be his greatest self-portrait oil paintings.
